Reports to: Senior GIS Analyst / Project Manager
Job Purpose:
The GIS Analyst will be responsible for conducting spatial data analysis, managing geographic information system databases, and creating accurate and visually appealing maps and charts to support environmental research and conservation efforts. The incumbent will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to collect, analyze, interpret, and present geospatial data in order to facilitate informed decision-making and enhance environmental planning and management.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Conduct spatial data analysis using GIS software to identify and interpret patterns, relationships, and trends in environmental data.
2. Develop and maintain geospatial databases, ensuring data accuracy, integrity, and security.
3. Collaborate with project teams to assess data requirements, develop data collection methodologies, and implement data acquisition plans.
4. Create maps, charts, and other visual representations of geospatial data for research reports, presentations, and publications.
5. Utilize GIS tools to perform geoprocessing tasks, including geocoding, georeferencing, spatial modeling, and data conversion.
6. Conduct quality control checks on data inputs, outputs, and processes to ensure accuracy and consistency.
7. Assist in the design and implementation of field data collection protocols, including GPS data collection, remote sensing, and satellite imagery analysis.
8. Stay updated on advancements in GIS technology, tools, and methodologies, and recommend improvements or modifications to enhance analysis capabilities.
9. Collaborate with internal stakeholders and external partners to support spatial analysis needs and provide technical expertise in GIS-related matters.
10. Maintain documentation of GIS processes, workflows, and methodologies, ensuring adherence to best practices and standards.
11. Provide training and technical support to colleagues on GIS software and applications.
12. Adhere to organizational policies, guidelines, and protocols, including data security and confidentiality.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Geography, Geomatics, or a related field. Master's degree preferred.
2. Minimum of X years of experience in GIS analysis or a related field, preferably in an environmental science context.
3. Proficiency in using GIS software, such as ArcGIS, QGIS, or similar platforms, including data management, analysis, and cartography functions.
4. Strong knowledge of geospatial data concepts, including coordinate systems, projections, and spatial databases.
5. Demonstrated ability to analyze complex spatial data sets, apply statistical techniques, and interpret results.
6. Experience in creating and maintaining geodatabases, spatial data models, and metadata standards.
7. Familiarity with remote sensing techniques, satellite imagery analysis, and GPS data collection.
8. Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in GIS, such as Python, R, or SQL.
9. Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and resolve data inconsistencies and inaccuracies.
10. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to effectively present GIS analysis findings to diverse audiences.
11. Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams, prioritize tasks, and meet project deadlines.
12. Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
13. Understanding of environmental science principles and their application in GIS analysis.
14. Knowledge of relevant environmental policies, regulations, and frameworks.
